The Black Cat Breaks a Mirror
As the summer tourist season draws to a close in Lavender, Texas, Sabrina and her cat, Hitchcock, has invited her brother and nephews for the highly anticipated concert of Colt Jamison. His hit song “Broken Mirror” is rising to the top of the Nashville charts. But their stay begins on a sour note when one of the boys stumbles upon the dead body of Jamison’s former public relations manager, a man who’d long ago burned his bridges in town, leaving no shortage of suspects in the murder.
As Sabrina is reluctantly drawn into the investigation, she’s confronted with a country singer who may be harboring more than a few dark secrets, an overzealous fan club president who may be up to her ears in criminal activities. Someone is leaving shards of broken mirrors scattered all over town. Just as Sabrina narrows the list of suspects and closes in on the culprit, she realizes that seven years of bad luck may be the least of her worries.

Sabrina is a cozy writer; she loves what she does, but allows herself to get distracted from the writing her new book proposal when murder comes to town. She may not be a New York Times bestseller yet, but she has all the makings of one. Unfortunately, her career may end before it gets started if she can prove that she didn’t commit murder. The latest additions to the “A Bad Luck cat Mystery” series, The Black Cat Breaks a Mirror, will have readers turning the page and spending a few hours riveted to each one.
Sabrina is a compelling character that readers will enjoy. Her writing will take a back seat to the murder investigation, but readers will get a sense of who she is and how she pieces together her books by how she devotes herself to finding the missing pieces of the puzzle that will prove the guilty party is arrested. Her aunt, brother, and nephews all have a role to play, and each brings a nuance to the story that keeps readers engaged and happy. The victim, Marty, isn’t necessarily a good guy, but neither is he the worst one around. It doesn’t take long for Sabrina to come up with multiple suspects and red herrings. The evidence leads to the killer, but may not be the character readers are anticipating. Many will be surprised to find out that everything they thought they knew turns out to be incorrect.
The writing is fluid, with effortless transitions and easy to follow narratives. Hitchcock, the cat, as usual, leaves readers with a need to run out and find a furry cat companion that they can have deep, meaningful conversations with, but there is only one Hitchcock. The recipes for some of the most delicious desserts have mouth-watering effects leaving readers hungry and anxious to try their hand at a few.
Overall The Black Cat Breaks a Mirror is a quick, enjoyable read that many readers will find hard to put down. This book can easily stand on its own. The writing will keep readers intriguing, and the outcomes will have them happily waiting for the next addition.
Readers who enjoy author based cozies with an amateur sleuth will enjoy Lynn Cahoon’s fantastic “A Cat Latimer Mystery” or perhaps Ellen Byron’s southern style “A Cajun Country Mystery”.
